Podcast #3

This Podcast is about the history of the Writers Guild of America and what it is. I am not too happy with this podcast and honestly think it sucks for these reasons: 1) I did not export all of my video and did not realize that until it was too late and didn't have the camera to export the rest. 2) I used iMovie 8 for the first time and although I think it might be easier to use overall, I had problems doing certain things I had done in past podcasts with iMovie 6. 3) I think I could have made this podcast better than it is (even without the video I haven't exported) but I did not have the time to improve it due to a busy schedule outside of this class. I will definitely improve this piece on the history of the Writers Guild of America when I do my Final 15-20 minute podcast. I did learn a few new things in creating this podcast. I have never used slides before in my previous podcasts and I intend to use some slides in my final podcasts. Also, I used a transition at the end of the last slide which I had never thought to use.  This podcast does seem choppy to me; I did not have enough b-roll or video to use three songs, but I was bored and just wanted to add music wherever I could to make the slides not so boring. I plan to add more video so the songs aren't back to back. I hope I explained enough of the history of the Writers Guild of America in the little video I had...and once again I will explain more in the final podcast. But overall, I am definitely more comfortable making and editing podcasts and I think the reason I am so unhappy with this podcast is because I know what I am capable of doing and what I could have done to make this podcast better.

I liked how you introduced the topic to this podcast. You gave a neat description of the Writer's Guild of America, East and West. I didn't know that there were two groups. I liked the slides that explained how they united and how eventually the strike was resolved. Sometimes, pictures are as good as words in telling a story, and I think in this case you certainly succeeded. I like the choice of music as well. From the cheery start by Blind Melon to the more somber words of Tupac and the other artists over the b-roll.
The pictures you chose were interesting and represented the live action from the strikes pretty well. I would have been interested to know a bit more about the Writer's Guild's operations on each coast. Hopefully, you will be covering that in your final podcast. I look forward to seeing what you do for that. Good job,Ashley.

You might frame yourself a bit more to the left in this. I like the opening. Watch the jump cuts (around 1:12 or so). Around 1:41 or so, you come back on screen for just a brief second—you should either stay on camera longer or not cut back. While the photomontage is nice, it is a bit long for the purpose of this video-it doesn’t really convey the history of the guild, which is the topic of the podcast. The slide that runs around 4:16 has much too much text on it. You would have been better off reading it and using some pull quotes. When you are selecting music, make sure it fits, particularly for a montage. You’ve got a great topic. I look forward to seeing the next podcast.

Ashley--

The shots of you at the beginning were very steady. It looked like you were trying to connect one of the major issues (TV shows posted online) that led to the writer’s strike. This was very creative. You provided a preview of the topic at the beginning of the podcast (history of Writer’s Guild), but it seemed like that was only a brief part of the podcast. Consider providing a discussion of the strike after your brief history of the Guild. I did like your use of b-roll. And the music was synced with the images of the strike. The images helped to provide a very good idea of what the strike was about, but as I mentioned before you should consider providing a brief description of what the strike was about (e.g., residuals) before the montage of strike images. The slides also helped to explain what the strike was about, but some of them moved a little fast. And there was one slide with a lot of text, which was about the resolution between the writers and the industry. On this slide I would suggest breaking it down so that viewers can digest it. Good job. It was very creative.

The introduction was funny, you looked so consumed by what was on screen. The music was great throughout the podcast, especially the last one ('Office Space'...what a movie). You took a bit of a risk relying on music, pictures and on-screen text for the cast, but I think, for the most part, it worked. I liked all the slides of the strikers; you had a lot of good ones. It real put into perspective how big of an issue it was. I would have liked you to talk a bit about the slides containing the text. The slide with the long quote was especially hard to read. I got into the music and did not pay too much attention to it. You did leave the slides up long enough to read which was nice. I would have to disagree with your statement that your podcast sucked. I enjoyed it. You did a really good job. As always I am looking forward to your next one. Nicely done.
